Ripper A Novel Isabel Allende Ollie Brock Frank Wynne Books
This book is awful. Poorly edited, poorly written, cliched characters, not so surprising plot twist and so on. I am angry that Amazon recommended this to me and that I didn't read the review before buying it. It was not the worst book I've ever read but it's in the bottom five - the ones where I'm angry that I'll never get those hours of my life back because they were wasted on such poor craft. She ought to refund everyone who paid for this garbage.Tags : Amazon.com: Ripper: A Novel (9780062291400): Isabel Allende, Ollie Brock, Frank Wynne: Books,Isabel Allende, Ollie Brock, Frank Wynne,Ripper: A Novel,Harper,0062291408,Crime,Thrillers - Suspense,Crimestoppers,FICTION Suspense,FICTION Thrillers,Internet games,Internet games;Fiction.,Mystery fiction,Serial murderers - California - San Francisco,Serial murderers;California;San Francisco;Fiction.,Suspense fiction,Teenagers,Teenagers;Fiction.,ALLENDE, ISABEL - PROSE & CRITICISM,California,Chile,Crime & mystery,FICTION Crime,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fiction,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Fiction-Thriller,FictionCrime,FictionThrillers - Suspense,GENERAL,General Adult,MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE FICTION,Mystery fiction,MysterySuspense,San Francisco,Serial murderers,Serial murderers - California - San Francisco,Serial murderers;California;San Francisco;Fiction.,Suspense fiction,Teenagers,Teenagers;Fiction.,Thrillers - General,Thrillers - Suspense,United States,FICTION Crime,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,FictionCrime,FictionThrillers - Suspense,Thrillers - General,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Allende, Isabel - Prose & Criticism,Mystery And Suspense Fiction,California,San Francisco,Serial murderers,Fiction,MysterySuspense,Crime & mystery
Ripper A Novel Isabel Allende Ollie Brock Frank Wynne Books Reviews
Note This review was written before Allende’s comments that she wrote the book as a joke, at the urging of her agent.
Prior to reading Ripper, the only Isabel Allende book I had read was House of Spirits. It was back in high school so, while I don’t remember much about it, I do remember that I enjoyed it more than most assigned books. That said, I was pretty excited to get my hands on her new novel, Ripper. I largely ignored the mediocre reviews because the ones I had come across were written by long-time Allende fans and, unlike them, I had no loyalty to the author. Turns out, however, they were correct in their assertions that this isn’t her best work. Granted, I haven’t read any of her books (other than House of Spirits), but I have to assume that they are much better than this one because she’s such a beloved author.
Ripper is a murder mystery and Allende’s first foray into the thriller/mystery/suspense world. The story centers around Amanda, who runs an online murder-mystery game called Ripper that steps offline and into the real world as she and her online friends start investigating a string of real-life murders. Her mother, a free-spirited holistic healer, isn’t thrilled with Amanda’s morbid curiosity but her strong-willed daughter continues her investigations, anyway. Turns out, Mom had good reason to be concerned. Soon, Amanda is off to investigate the disappearance of her own mother and figure out whether it’s linked to the murders she had been investigating.
While I have no doubt that this book could have done well (the premise has promise), I was disappointed by it. The writing was choppy and the characters were predictable and embodied stereotypes the hardened Navy SEAL, the free-spirited Reiki healer, and the impotent rich guy, to name a few. So while I didn’t dislike the book, I didn’t enjoy it, either. There were some good parts and I tore through certain sections, but overall I was pretty ambivalent and disappointed. Regardless, I think I’m going to go read some of Allende’s other works because I know she’s a fantastic author!
I enjoyed reading this book. I also enjoyed the TV show Dexter. However, I don't like either BECAUSE THEY ARE ABOUT SERIAL KILLERS!!!!! Dexter's strength was the dark humor that infused an emotionally stunted character's observation of "normal" human behavior. Anyone who can laugh at themselves could laugh along with Dexter's wicked insights. Ripper is along those lines. Allende takes the mystery genre and makes it kitchy in the best possible way. The characters are contemporary stereotypes with a bit of light at their centers, which actually makes them fun to read. Once again, if you feel comfortable laughing at yourself, you'll feel probably enjoy Indiana's determination to see only the best in all people, and where that leads her. Underneath this exterior, though, is a challenge, I think. As the finale turns one of these stereotypes on its head, while taking another to its spiritual extreme. The villain is complete and well-drawn. I almost wish what was shown in the last few pages had been drawn out more, and earlier. But, overall, this is wonderful, entertaining read. IMHO there's nothing wrong with breaking the genre, and I found this instance quite refreshing.
Ripper PS is a very odd mixture of characters, themes, motives and resolutions. I liked the well-developed characters and found the story readable although it was not compelling. The technical quality of the writing was good. The revenge-driven plot was cheaply explained in the last chapters of the book by the killer's own narration, and also simultaneously discovered by a club of teenagers sleuthing facts online. However, the final actual murder and the final intended murder are muddy departures from the basic theme and the drama that concludes the book is ridiculous. Final intended twists are more melodramatic than effective. Also at the end, some key characters are blithely narrated into the sunset and some interesting others are ignored. I gave it 2 stars because of the characters, quality of writing and plot (that might have been so much better-developed).
I grew up from a young girl for the past 5 decades, reading Isabelle Allende. From her poignant narration in Paula she swept me away from a little sleepy township in South Africa to learn about the military dictatorship in the House of the Spirits through the eyes of Clara. There is a familiarity to the tragedies of the family's drama and how we share 'spiritual' sameness in different corners of the world - i.e. Clara having a premonition of her sisters tragic accidental death, which was in fact her mother's attempt to murder her father. Clara's refusal to speak is broken only when her dead sister's husband Esteban returns to ask for her hand in marriage. I hungrily read the Infinite Plan and many other books which always filled me with a familiarity of human life, shared struggles and the triumphant human spirit. Ripper opens with a riveting and catching prediction of the death of a character, but this is the end for me off all things rivetting - the rest of the book was very different and an unusual reading experience compared to her past writings. I was disappointed, as I found only a very quick production of a detective story around the murders of a serial killer in the making. I prefer Allende's narrations of all things philosophical, spiritual and political - even when she told these as fiction.
This book is awful. Poorly edited, poorly written, cliched characters, not so surprising plot twist and so on. I am angry that recommended this to me and that I didn't read the review before buying it. It was not the worst book I've ever read but it's in the bottom five - the ones where I'm angry that I'll never get those hours of my life back because they were wasted on such poor craft.
