Weepers A Novel by Nick Chiarkas Nick Chiarkas 9781595983909 Books

This gritty coming-of-age novel about a young boy named Angelo had me hooked from the beginning. Witnessing the disappearance of his father at such a young age had a huge impact on Angelo, and how he grew up from that point on. The author does a great job in describing to us the pits and perils of life and growing up in the 1950s on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Angelo is a tough kid, and he and his group of friends do what they have to in order to survive in a charged and often tense atmosphere of teen angst. Gangs are rampant in his neighborhood, and these boys have no choice but to either join or become a target themselves. Instead, Angelo and his friends end up creating their own gang, Weepers, and we watch as they struggle to prove themselves. Angelo’s journey to becoming a man is a riveting tale, and one that I would recommend to anyone, but especially teenage boys, as I feel they could really relate to the story. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Weepers A Novel by Nick Chiarkas Nick Chiarkas 9781595983909 Books Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters were rich and plot line interesting. I'm from Wisconsin and my husband is from NY so it was a fun read for me.
Such a wonderful book! I was absolutely captivated by the story and the characters - I felt like I was right there in the projects with them. I am really looking forward to reading more about Uncle Nunzio!!
What a great story. The author must have experienced many of the emotions Angelo did, since he made his feelings so real. His recreation of the world he grew up in is suspenseful and moving, and Angelo's mentors are well rounded, both good and bad, so we feel they're true to life.
this story is elegantly written. Very rare that I actually buy subsequent books from the same author, but this book did it for me. The story is a coming-of-age type set in the slums of New York, but is beautifully written with a good blend of character development and action. A must read!
Well written book, and as a New Yorker, the city is portrayed beautifully and naturally. Excellent mystery. I really like how the author brings to life the era of the story. You can actually picture NY in that era, the streets, street talk, family ties and the way of life. It is authentic, down to the family mannerisms and lifestyle. Perfectly portrayed and well-written.
I really liked this book. It describes the lives of the members of an extended family, most of whom live in a public housing project in 1950's New York City. Mafia activity, gang warfare and police corruption are major parts of the story. There is a fair amount of violence, but it's not out of keeping with the story. The characters are well developed and invite sympathy, and the plot starts with a bang in the opening scene, maintains suspense throughout the book and has a few surprises toward the end. I had a hard time putting down this book!
Weepers, written by Mr. Nick Chiarkas, was an excellent read that had me captivated from the first few pages until the very end...and what a great ending it was! I had a hard time putting this book down, and was a bit sad when it came to an end. This was a courageous story of a boy growing up in the housing projects of 1950's Lower Manhattan, and all that it entailed. I found myself intrigued by all the twists and turns of a young boy's life in the projects. I was spellbound by this story that included tender words of love from a close-knit family, yet riveted, and on the edge of my seat, with tales of gangs, organized crime, and murder. The story invoked a perfect balance of emotions, from love and compassion to fear and anger, which ultimately left me longing for more. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel!
