Phoenix A Black City Novel eBook Elizabeth Richards

On this second installment of the “Black City” trilogy by Elizabeth Richards, we get to follow Ash and Natalie on a new journey as they’re part of the rebellion that Ash’s resurrection ignited against Purian Rose, his Sentry guards and his followers. What I mostly enjoying about this book was the rebellion, the consequences, the new species we get to meet and the secrets we get to uncover. Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I wanted to. Some of the characters were pretty annoying and did some ridiculous things in the middle of the rebellion while they’re being chased by soldiers and bounty hunters, but oh well, you’ll know more of that later on. But besides that, I loved the tension and the different action-packed encounters our characters have throughout the story.

The author’s writing was great and it managed to capture my attention for long enough to actually understand what was happening, have a good mental image of these new places we get to visit and have and idea of the differences between the darklings, the humans, the wraths and the new species we get to meet like: the bastets.

We get to visit multiple settings that will scare, marvel and surprise you in multiple ways. First, we managed to be in Black City and see how things were going there with the rebellion against Purian Rose and his Rose Law. Then we got a close look at the Barren Lands and how deadly they can be. And some other places I won’t mention just to avoid giving away some spoilers. But anyway, I found the settings to be pretty unique and interesting, and I really enjoyed how they helped shape the plot of the story and the interactions between the characters.

We got to meet with some familiar characters like our main characters Ash and Natalie, Polly, Sebastian, Purian Rose, Elijah and Sigur; whom we met in “Black City”. But we also got to meet some new characters like Garrick, Sasha, Giselle, Roach, etc, who played important parts around Ash, Natalie, Purian Rose and the rebellion against him. I enjoyed most of the characters throughout the beginning of the story, but then it got to a point where Ash and Natalie were being ridiculous and their romance, instead of making me happy like on the first book, it annoyed me. Why? Because while their friends and families were fighting and dying back in the battlefield the rebels caused to distract the government so they could escape and look for answers, Ash and Natalie were doing dumb stuff because of jealousy and I just…it was annoying. But thankfully, that was all that bothered me.

In the end, even though I didn’t got to enjoy “Phoenix” as much as I enjoyed “Black City” due to a few things in the romance of the main characters, I think this was a good follow up to Black City. Why? Because things were starting to get interesting and people were starting to rise from the ashes by themselves and for themselves either to join Purian Rose or to join the rebellion against him. And now that I finished? Now I’d like to move on to the final installment of the series: “Wings”, but I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon due to hurricane Maria and the pressure University is throwing at me but, who knows? Maybe later in the future I’ll get the chance to finish this great trilogy!

Phoenix A Black City Novel eBook Elizabeth Richards Reviews

This book was so so frustrating but I also loved it. I spent the entire book wanting to strangle something and resisting the urge to toss my book across the room, but at the same time I could not put the book down. It was glued to my hands and anyone who tried to disturb my reading was treated to one of my patented death glares. I really enjoyed Black City, but Phoenix really ramped up the action.

The world Elizabeth Richards has created is absolutely amazing. It is dark and twisted and dangerous and nobody is ever safe. She doesn’t shy away from that danger and there is absolutely no guarantee that any characters will make it out alive. There are so many twists and turns along the way, it is impossible to see where the story is going. It is such a perfect combination of dystopian and paranormal. The world embodies everything you expect from a dystopian, but the addition of darklings and other creatures really makes it stand out.

My favorite character of them all is Ash. He is such a great character and my heart hurt for him in this one. He is put through so much and he cannot seem to catch a break. Nothing ever goes smoothly for him. I did get frustrated when he jumped to conclusions, but I do get it. What else was he expected to think? He loves Natalie so much and the thought of losing her absolutely crushes him. I love how much he loves Natalie. It’s adorable and so romantic.

Natalie is the one I truly struggled with in this book. I really wanted to knock some sense into her. My gosh. I cannot remember the last time I was this frustrated with a character. At first I understood where she was coming from, but then I just couldn’t take it anymore. She was being incredibly selfish. She knew Ash had jumped to the wrong conclusion and did nothing to stop him from thinking that because she thought the truth would be worse. Fun fact; the truth is never the worse option. All of their problems could have been solved with a simple conversation and because of that it drove me bonkers.

The ending to Phoenix will leave you dying to pick up Wings. It’s not a full blown cliffhanger, but it’s pretty close. I have so many questions and the revelations have me dying for answers. I need more!

Phoenix is a great follow up to Black City and this one does not suffer from middle book syndrome at all. It starts off action packed and keeps it up until the very end. There is no slow down and it perfectly sets up the big show down we know is coming. Simply put, this book was awesome.
