The Beginning of Always Marie Cole 9781520477268 Books Reviews
It shows what first love and first-ever lovers are about. It's about Neil and Claire being friends first then lovers and trust between each other.Slightly erotic but still about real life.
In Aquanis University, the children of gods from different pantheons co-exist peacefully (in a manner of speaking) as they navigate through college life and all its offerings dorm room shuffles, bffs, boys and bullies to uncontrollable libidos, date rape, and sexual self-discovery.
The writing of the book flowed easily and the descriptions were detailed and well thought out. It mirrors most real life experiences in college - both the good and the bad. I would have wanted more focus on the growth of the main characters as well as a clearer vision of their backstories, powers, and purpose. From the way that this book was done, it was like Claire and company were the Squib equivalent of demigods.
Also, there were plot holes that needed additional "meat". The summary tells us of a plot to murder Claire by her father's jealous wife, but this is tackled in less than two paragraphs near the end of the novel. Why use that in the blurb when it's barely even a footnote in the story. Also, with an attempt at murder and deaths that followed, no investigation was opened or mentioned, the only nod to the event was a reference to a student vigil happening some nights after.
Aside from Neil, Claire and Justice's godly parents I do not believe others may have been mentioned. Was this a mixed school? Or strictly for the Squib-Demigods?
Being a sucker for love stories, I liked how Claire and Neil developed from being friends to eventual Lovers. I also would have wanted to read more about Merit and Kurt, perhaps in the second installment, since this is the first of a series?
All in all, I want to like this book but lengthy prose about angsty teens giving in to their sexual urges is not my idea of a young adult novel. This book straddles the line of Erotica and YA, which is strange and confusing.
I got this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review- thanks!
I enjoyed the Percy Jackson series, I enjoy a bit of sex in books, and I've been interested in modern fairy tale/mythology retellings lately, so I thought this would hit a few different sweet spots. Unfortunately it turned out to be a few hot sex scenes strung together with a loose plot and vague settings.... and a few not-hot, extremely offputting scenes which in my opinion kick it straight out of the YA genre. The entire thing was rife with grammar errors and the line breaks didn't help explain who was speaking. I found myself wondering if it had been written in a different language and translated over- errors like it's/its and your/you're, as well as tense errors were fairly common. Did the people on here who said the writing was great get a different version than I did?
I really wish the setting and backstory had been more developed- it's really "a few people (all people?) at this school are children of gods, and sometimes the gods mess with their lives or they have minor powers or something" and then is ignored for sexytimes.
Top it all off with the 'twist' at the end and you have a book I'm left scratching my head about. What exactly WAS that?
2.5 Stars
I liked the premise of the book and I was pretty shocked at the borderline erotica, but it missed the mark for me. I felt like it was too YA to be Erotica and Too Erotica to be YA...If that makes sense. While there was good suspense moments, they were all explained in the book blurb and there wasn't enough back story to keep me fully engaged. I thought a school for the children of Gods was a great world start, but there wasn't much development. Other than a few students saying who their God parent was, it didn't go more deep than that. I was left with a lot of questions , but more than enough sex.
Speaking of that I found the scene with Claire, Neil and Justice, odd and out of place as well as never resolved. I kept waiting for Justice to use it as a ace up her sleeve, of find out that she was susceptible to Claire "Curse". Which we never found out what that was or why it happened. I think there is a market for this, I just wish it was either marketed as Erotica, or fleshed out more.
Claire liked having early morning classes as that left her the afternoon to hang out with her sorority sisters, practice with the cheer squad, and people watch. Claire can see auras. People are surrounded by color, at first Claire only sees one color but the more she stares she can see other colors. Like orange- enjoys whatever the person is doing, red means the person is a perfectionist, and brown radiates people that are comfortable in their own skin. Claire and Merit are friends. Claire likes to set her friends up but as yet she hadn’t went after who she wanted. Bill always had two trays of food before him and a notebook he sketched in. Bill was new at the school and Claire was the first person to talk to Bill since he had been there. Eros- the God- was Claire's father. Bill said he wasn’t rushing a fraternity because large groups of people and him didn’t get along very well. Neil was really attracted to Claire but felt she was untouchable. Bill showed up at a party Claire was at and she introduced him to Merit. Claire got drunk and Bill and Merit took her home. Bill slept on the floor and Merit was next to Claire. Claire want to Neil about men.
I just really enjoy this book it seemed to be more about sex than anything . This just wasn’t what I thought it would be. I was just disappointed and didn’t enjoy this book.
Was a good YA romance, a little more serious than I thought it would be but realistic and well written. A little paranormal witH the H/h backgrounds but that's all. JIR
